About

Hi, I'm Mati.

Speaker, MC, podcaster and founder. Born in Zimbabwe, at home in Melbourne, and happiest with a mic in one hand and a run sheet in the other.

My story

I've always ended up building the room.

Everything I've done comes back to one thing: making space for people to be seen, and then making sure the day runs well once they're in it.

I started in fashion. I wrote a blog called L'entendre about style and identity as an African woman in Australia, ran a small label under the same name, and in 2016 I was nominated for Fashion Blogger of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women's Awards. I ran FashionOne, and I wrote for Salt Magazine, which covers African-Australian life.

In 2015 I founded FreekÀ Runway, a multicultural runway show for emerging creatives in Melbourne. The first show was an unexpected success. The second was staged for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week in 2016 with designers, dancers, artists and musicians from right across the city. Our motto, Express : Your : Self, is still the best description of what I want an audience to feel.

Alongside all of that I spent years in program management at Monash University, looking after education programs and the budgets, stakeholders and timelines that come with them. That's why event organisers get someone who's as calm about the run sheet as she is lively on stage.

In October 2025 I co-founded What Left The Group Chat with Tahj and Jill. It's a podcast about work, beauty, migration, motherhood, the mental load and friendship, told by three Black women living in Australia, and it's now in its second season. And in October 2026 I'll be hosting the Women of Colour Melbourne Annual Gathering as MC.

How I work

What you can expect from me.

01

Energy and a run sheet

I bring the warmth, and I also bring the timings. The two aren't in competition.

02

Everyone else looks good

A good host makes the speakers shine. I warm them up, balance the panel and make sure the quiet ones get heard.

03

No corporate filler

I talk to a room the way I talk to my friends: direct, specific and human. It works just as well in a boardroom.
